It’s time for another Peanuts review. Dominick did a review for one of the DVDs released in this set, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Now it’s my turn to review the entire set. I grew up with the Peanuts. Didn’t we all? I’m pretty sure anyone who grew up from the mid-1960s onward has happy memories about watching Peanuts holiday specials while growing up. I’m a child of the 80s and I know I do.
When I had my son, one of the first movies I let him watch on VHS (this was back in the mid-90s, a little before DVD became the only thing to own) was A Charlie Brown Christmas. Since he was just a little baby, he’s been in love with Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang. Now that he’s 13, he still loves Peanuts and honestly, who could blame him? What’s not to like? It’s one of those cartoons that no matter how old you are you’re going to like it. Watching A Charlie Brown Christmas is pretty much an ingrained tradition in most households, ranking up there with watching It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story (which is going to be re-released this year on DVD - and I’m very excited about this) every year at Christmas.
Peanuts brings families together. I can remember gathering in front of the television with my older brother and my mom to watch the Peanuts specials. Now that I have my own family, all of us (and still my mom is with us) gather up in the living room to watch it on the big screen television. I feel something warm and tingly inside me every time I watch Peanuts holiday classics. I guess you’d call it nostalgia. It reminds me of my past, present and reminds me of how magnificent my future can be as I expand my family and allow the future children in my family to enjoy the Peanuts gang as much as I did when I was their age.

I love Max & Ruby. What a fun show. I watch it with or without my kids. Max is so funny and Ruby is so bossy, but always comes around in the end. This is what sibling rivalry and relationships is all about. Despite being a few years apart in age, Max and Ruby really seem to love and respect one another, even if Max doesn’t always show it. His antics are pretty funny though and they’re relatively harmless, in the grand scheme of things.
We’ve had the chance to watch and review several other Max & Ruby titles including Max and Ruby - Berry Bunny Adventures and Max and Ruby - A Very Bunny Christmas. The show is lighthearted and has a valuable message for kids. Not only are younger kids going to like this show, but older kids will, as well. Having watched it with both a 4 year old and 13 year old, I can tell you that both of them enjoyed the antics of Max and his sister Ruby. There’s just something about that little, 3 year old bunny that a wide variety of audiences can enjoy.

I had the chance to review He-Man and the Masters of the Universe – Volume One previously and now I’m reviewing the second volume that offers the remaining episodes of the first season of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This is the 2002 remake of the popular cartoon that aired in the 1980s. I grew up with the 80s He-Man and I remember playing He-Man adventures with my brother and playing with the Castle Grayskull play set. I had an Orko that got terribly mauled by our dog (who we gave to the cable man because he ate my orthopedic shoes), but I still used to play with him, partial head and all.
Many have said they much prefer the 2002 version (though the 1985 is revered for its nostalgic properties), because the stories are tighter, the writing is better, it’s not quite as cheesy and the overall character development is more in depth. I’d have to agree with that, for the most part, but the 1985 version of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will always have a special place in my heart. That’s the show I grew up with and remember watching every episode from the start of the series until the very end.
