While I have used the brand Franklin Electronics numerous times in the past for calculators (especially Graphing Calculators) I have never purchase their products for children or their dictionary products. Still, when I was approached to review a Franklin product, I was interested in checking out the Electronic Children’s Dictionary for a number of reasons. While I do not have a child between the ages of six and eleven (the suggested ages), I have a nephew that is getting there, and a son that is only a bit older than that.

What I found while testing this out was that this dictionary has a number of uses beyond the obvious and that it would be perfect for kids in that age range, as well as for older children and even adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities. Having a dictionary like this gives a child a sense of independence. If they do not know a word, they no longer have to rely on someone else to find out what it means.

With the Speaking Children’s Dictionary a child can type in the word (thanks to a phonetic spell check, the child doesn’t have to spell the word correctly) and he/she will be able to find out what it means. While we came across a few words not included in the dictionary, there are about 44,000 words loaded up, so this shouldn’t be a major problem that your child encounters.

Positives:
None other than price

Pricing & Availability:
I have yet to go into a department store around my home and not find the Franklin Electronics brand. Chances are, the same could be said for you. However, if your local stores do not sell The Speaking Children’s Dictionary with Spell Correction you can easily find this on Amazon and at plenty of other Internet shopping sites.

When it comes to the price I admit that I would be a bit hesitant to purchase this. It is not that I don’t think it’s a good product. It’s more that I would be worried about the limited life of the product. That being said, the price is well worth it if your child is struggling with learning problems, reading, or language.

This will give them the confidence and independence needed to excel in these educational areas. However, if your child is on target where learning is concerned it would really just depend on if you felt they needed this to further their learning. In some cases it will be a highly recommended product and in others, it’s completely optional.

Price: 3 out of 5 stars

Requirements & Instructions:
As with most learning products you aren’t going to have too many problems getting this to work. The folks at Franklin Electronics have tried to make this as easy as possible for the kids that will be using it. The hardest part (as with most toys these days) is going to be getting the batteries in. Once you’ve accomplished this everything should be smooth sailing. Instructions are easy to follow and there are a number of large print, bright buttons to help you get where you need to go.

Durability:
The Speaking Children’s Dictionary is plastic and has a flip cover to protect the keyboard and screen. Short of crushing this you shouldn’t have any durability issues. This could be dropped once (or much more) and you probably wouldn’t even notice that there was a problem. Based on the hard plastic and the purpose of the item, I could see this outlasting the majority of children that will be using it.

Durability: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Ease of Use:
I don’t think the average child will have any problem with this. In the case of CT he knew just what he wanted to do and how to make it happen. Granted he is a little older, but he was new to the product and was using it like he was an old pro. Braxton did not have any interest in this, though as a four year old, I expected that would be the case.

I am sure if he attempted to get it to work he would have been able to after a little trial and error. If your child has learning difficulties and they are severe you may need to help them out some until they get the hang of it, but most children should do just fine on their own.

Ease of Assembly: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Child Readiness: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Fun Factor & Overall Appeal:
I don’t know that I would say this is a fun product, but it is certainly worthwhile. It’s something that most kids can use and in some cases it will get them excited about learning because it will remove some of the minor frustrations that cause them to want to stop trying to learn things.

The features include:
44,000 Words are loaded up into the dictionary
Phonetic based Spelling Correction (turns luv into love)
Speaks both Words and Definitions
Offers Word by Word Matching
Offers an Interactive Rhyme Finder
The Most Simple Definitions are Included
Personal Spelling Word List (Load up your Spelling words for the Week and practice with various exercises)
Offers Five Word Games with Varying Degree of Skill
Confusables Feature distinguishes Different Words that Sound Alike
Animated Guide Offers Print and Cursive Handwriting Models
Use with Headphones

If the user like word games this will be a lot more fun than if they prefer other types of games. That being said there is way more here than just a dictionary. From handwriting help to study support, this is one dictionary that is a hands-on learning tool with games to boot.

Fun Factor: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Lasting Appeal: 5 out of 5 stars

Bottom Line:
While The Speaking Children’s Dictionary with Spell Correction doesn’t have as long of a shelf life, per child, as I would like, I can easily see why children would benefit from owning one of these. If they are struggling in school, I highly recommend that you pick one of these up. If they are not but they are interested in language, want to be better writers, or want some more independence when it comes to socialization and understanding some more difficult words, this is the perfect product for them. I recommend checking this out, especially if you think your child will benefit from what Franklin Electronics has to offer.

Overall Rating: 4.17 out of 5 stars

On the surface the Jakks Motion Control Disney Play House Game looks like the perfect toy. It’s a plug and play game similar to a child version of the Wii, but for a much cheaper price. The game is filled with Disney characters so it is safe for the little ones and based on the design, it should be easy enough for them to use. Unfortunately, just because something sounds good in theory, it does not make it as good as it sounds.

In this case, what you end up with is not worth the money you will spend. The handheld toys do not always sync up the way that they should and the games are not only quick, they are too easy. You have about three rounds per game/character, sometimes more, but that seems the norm here.

After you’ve completed all of the rounds you can go back and do it again, but it seems there is little point. Like with an adult video game, once you have achieved the main goal, there is little reason to revisit the game, unless it is an amazing game (in this case that is not an issue).

Positives & Negatives:

Positives:
Kids Won’t have Any Problem Using this
Features characters Kids Know and Love

Negatives:
Not Challenging
Poor Design
Poor Graphic Quality
Characters Don’t Speak
No Real Relation to the Shows Other than Character Use
Not Worth the Price

Pricing & Availability:
Spending $80 or more on any toy can pretty much assure that this is a Christmas or birthday gift. I have no problem spending that much money on the children I love, but I want to know that it is money well spent. We were given this unit to us from Jakks for a review.

Based on the simplicity factor and how quickly children seem to tire with this, I have to say I am extremely glad that I did not pay for it. I would have been incredibly upset to learn that I wasted this much money.

Requirements & Instructions:
While I have heard about a few horror stories with getting the controllers to sync for this game, we did not have any problems in that area. Instructions are included, but you basically just hook up the game to your television and from there you can follow the on-screen instructions for the games you choose to play. For the most part, everything is self-explanatory.

This game system is easy enough for a small child to handle all on their own as long as it has been set up for them. Normally this would be considered a good thing, though I can’t help but feel this is just too easy and that is a major downfall. Other parents who have reviewed this have said their child, as young as 2 and 3, grew bored with this toy and found it too easy to play. To me, that is a major problem.

Durability:
As with any plug and play game there is a sense of limited durability. I always try to treat each toy with respect, so it’s anyone’s guess as to how rough you can really be with this. I think it could sustain a fall to the floor, but if anything worse than that happened it might be some cause for worry. Again, that is pretty standard for any game like this. However, the difference is that most plug and play games are not as expensive as this one.

Ease of Use:
Once the game was hooked up I don’t think I heard one question as to how to play it. One of the biggest downsides of the Motion Control Disney Play House Game is that it is too easy. If a four year old can play it and lose interest because it’s just not challenging that is a pretty big downside. Needless to say the kids didn’t have any issue with this one. It was nice to see children as young as four being able to play independently with a game system.

On the other side, knowing they were bored relatively quickly because it was not hard enough was rather disappointing. Every game needs a certain amount of challenge otherwise it feels pointless. Unfortunately, the Motion Control Disney Play House Game ends up feeling pointless for a lot of kids because it lacks the challenge they require for it to feel fun.

Fun Factor & Overall Appeal:
I am guessing by now you figured out that this just was not very much fun. I cannot help but feel that this is due in part to a poor design. I don’t know if Jakks (normally a company I am fond of) was just rushing to get this one on the shelves or they didn’t realize the issues here, but the Playhouse Disney Ultimotion was just a complete bomb. The graphics were less than perfect and there really wasn’t much interaction that occurred between the characters and the children playing.

For instance, from what I noticed the characters (Handy Manny, Tigger and Pooh, etc) did not talk. I think the kids would have enjoyed it more if the characters were more interactive and reminiscent of their cartoons. The music got annoying real fast, too so that certainly did not help.

//-->

The most unfortunate thing was that the kids really did not like it. They played with it for less than an hour and really didn’t want to revisit it after that. We’ve tested out plenty of toys and games and I have never seen Lil B get bored with something so quickly. I think it took me longer to write this review than it did for him to play with the Ultimotion, get bored, and move on to something else.

Bottom Line:
While Jakks came up with a good toy in theory, I have to recommend skipping the Playhouse Disney Ultimotion. I’ve heard there are other Ultimotion games that are better and that may be the case, but when it comes to Playhouse Disney you should definitely save your money. The game is too easy, not interactive enough, and lacks the excitement factor that you would expect with a game like this for young children. There are plenty of other, better options to keep the kids happy.

Manufacturer: KidDesigns
Price: $39.99 at Toys R Us (Currently Out of Stock), $89.77 at Amazon

These days if a toy is listed as being for four years old and up, chances are if it is suitable for a boy then I have my eye on it. Originally, the Spiderman Spider Smart Learning Laptop missed my radar, though once it was brought to my attention I couldn’t wait to learn more about it. This is an excellent, educational toy for kids between the ages of about four and twelve. I have heard of some slightly older kids using and enjoying this, but I think that the teenage crowd picking this up on their own accord would be a rare occurrence.

Spiderman fans will certainly enjoy this. The main part of the case is blue with an embossed Spiderman mask in the middle of it that pops out on its own. The rest of the case offers some of the classic red and white webbing that has become associated with Spiderman. I was not sure if Lil B liked Spiderman or not, but I had a hunch he might like this toy.

Kids have a way of warming up to those technology based presents and laptop simulation toys are about as cool as they can get when you are Lil B’s age. He immediately was excited about the idea of playing all of the different games, and I, as a parent, loved the idea that he would play with something that was not only fun, but that would also teach him some valuable lessons.

Positives & Negatives:

Positives:
Excellent Learning tool
Offers nearly 50 activities including hangman, word jumble, and other games
Teaches numbers, letters, school subjects
SMART Chip technology included that allows the quizzes to become more challenging as the children learn
Translate button changes English content to Spanish
Spiderman voice and sound effects included
Good for small and older children

Negatives:
Screen is Small
Resolution/Graphics could be better

Pricing & Availability:
With anything these days, price is a major factor. You can find this Spiderman Laptop for anywhere from $40 to $90 depending on where you purchase it. Naturally, $90 is bordering on absurd for a toy of this caliber. However, $40 is fairly reasonable for something like this. It’s durable, grows as your child grows, and will last through more than one child without a problem. This isn’t something that you will buy right off the bat for a general occasion, but it will be perfect for birthdays, holidays, and other special moments in a child’s life.

Requirements & Instructions:
The only thing you need to get this laptop going is four AA batteries and they are included when you purchase the laptop. With that in mind, you can pop this out of the box and get right to using it without a problem. The instructions vary from game to game, but all of them are pretty simple to understand, as long as you can follow basic instructions and use the general keyboard to play the games. Most children shouldn’t have any problem using this and considering the fact that it can continue to become more challenging as your child becomes comfortable with the levels is an added bonus, making this even more worth the purchase.

Durability:
The Spiderman Laptop is made of hard plastic. It’s not anything that is going to break without a fight. Lil B is relatively easy on his toys, but accidents do happen and he is a little boy. That being said, he hasn’t banged this up too much just yet. I don’t imagine that he will. Honestly it looks like this could take a tumble and you wouldn’t even notice.

Ease of Use:
There were moments when Lil B needed my help, though he is the minimum suggested age that was listed for this particular toy. Still, he only needed my help for a few minutes and then he was fine and using this toy mostly on his own. It quickly got to the point where if he needed my help it was about something that most children his age wouldn’t know anyway. Lil B was nice enough to let me play with him, though it was clear that he could have handled the majority of play on his own.

Fun Factor & Overall Appeal:
With 48 games and plenty of learning activities this will keep the majority of kids busy all day long if they are interested in toys like this. Lil B had fun playing the games and he liked the fact that he was playing with something that resembled a “big boy toy.” At four he is entirely too independent, so this type of thing is perfect for him. I was surprised to see how much he liked it because he’s such a pirates fan. Generally, anything that is not pirate related gets tossed aside rather quickly. He has played with this several times though and genuinely enjoys the time he spends with it.

I also had a good time playing with him. While I wouldn’t have any enjoyment playing with it on my own, with a child it can be quite fun. The screen could have been bigger and I think if it had been it would have upped the enjoyment level, but for what it’s worth it’s easy to see why he enjoys this as much as he does.

We tested this with some of Lil B’s friends and cousins and the results were the same every time. If there is a complaint it has to do with the size of the screen. Otherwise, the kids enjoyed playing the various games and testing their skills and knowledge on all of the basic school subjects. Just the fact that this Spiderman Laptop makes learning fun makes this worth the purchase.

Bottom Line:
Check the price before you buy this, but once you find it for a reasonable price I recommend picking a Spiderman Laptop up. It would be nice to see a newer model with a better screen, but if that doesn’t come along this still isn’t too bad. That being said, if your child has any sort of visual impairments you might want to skip this. My son has glasses and he did fine, but if his sight were worse this would have been a major problem for him. For everyone else, especially school aged children struggling in school, I highly recommend this.

Let me start off this review by saying that I absolutely loathe Hannah Montana. Like her celebrity counterpart Miley Cyrus, I find her to be annoying and pointless. I often ponder how she became a celebrity at all and how this show became so popular. In any case, she is here and with her a million and a half Hannah Montana toys have swept the nation. I would have loved to have a little girl play with this, but we did not have access to one for this review.

We did have Lil B around though. Lil B is four but he just loves Hannah Tanna, as he calls her. I’ve tried to talk him out of it, but he just won’t listen to me. He likes her no matter what I say. That being said, he was more than willing to test out this guitar for me. Like most standard plug and play devices this is as easy to setup as putting in batteries and plugging it in.

It’s a small, basic looking guitar that looks similar to a Guitar Hero game except that the guitar is smaller. What we learned after playing this Hannah Montana Guitar is that it falls somewhere in the middle of worthiness to purchase. It’s too expensive to just run out and buy and it’s not consistently entertaining enough to make it seem like a worthwhile purchase. If your child is a rabid Hannah fan this will be more fun for them, but if you’re trying to save a few bucks buying your Hannah fan this instead of Guitar Hero, you might want to think twice.

Positives & Negatives:

Positives:
Hannah Fans will Love it
Easy to Setup
Musical/Creative

Negatives:
A little Pricey for what you receive
Feels like a Less Impressive version of Guitar Hero
Can be hard to use unless you go through all the Tutorials
Won’t move up in the game until you are real familiar with the controls
Limited Lifespan/Appeal

Pricing & Availability:
For something that has the look/feel of a Guitar Hero style game this is not that expensive. That being said, with the way that this game is, and the limited appeal (you only get Hannah songs) you might be better off buying Guitar Hero and saving your money here. Diehard fans will revisit the songs, but a lot of other children won’t once they have reached the top levels. With Guitar Hero you have the ability to have a bigger arsenal of songs, which not only will see to the needs of the entire family, but it will allow you to find enjoyment in the system longer because you have more songs to play.

Requirements & Instructions:
The setup instructions are as easy as pie. You put in the batteries, plug this in and your setup instructions and tutorials will be available in minutes. This is one area where Jakks set things up perfectly. The batteries are always a pain, but that is to be expected with the screws having to be put in and out. Otherwise, this section passes with flying colors.

Durability:
Unless your child is purposely hard on things this should last longer than their interest in it will. It’s made of hard plastic and it’s a guitar. This isn’t the sort of thing that just breaks on a whim. It will take a fall and be able to be dusted off and used again without a problem.

Ease of Use:
This is where things get tricky for the Hannah Montana Guitar. You have to do the tutorials and pass them for each level/style of play. If you choose to opt out of these tutorials you will not be able to play the game. If you are able to play you will find game play to be incredibly hard. If you push buttons the wrong way, you may not get the points.

Issues like these will lead to frustration for both parent and child. Even with the tutorials this takes a little bit of getting used to. The first levels will be the hardest, but once you pass them, and you have better hang of the game, it gets easier. It is funny how that is though because in most games, it goes from easy to hard, and not the other way around.

Fun Factor & Overall Appeal:
Before I begin, I feel it important to note the ages listed as being appropriate for the Hannah Montana Guitar. The ages according to the manufacturer, are between five and fifteen years old. I honestly cannot see a 15 year old playing with this. Even children as old as ten or eleven are ready for Guitar Hero, some younger (depending on the music used). If the child is old enough or able to play Guitar Hero, there is little point to something like this.

For the big fans, there are three game play modes. The modes are Pop Tour, Free Play, and Head to Head. Each mode is different. In Pop Tour mode the object is to continue playing new cities. When you hit a new city you unlock new songs. The Crowd Meter determines how well you are playing and whether or not you will move on to the next city. You need to unlock the songs in this mode to play in Free Play mode.

Free Play Mode is basically a non-scoring, non-advancing round. You are able to play as much as you want, though you can only play the songs that you’ve unlocked in the Pop Tour mode. Finally, Head to Head allows you to compete with friends. Again, you are only able to play the songs that are unlocked in the Pop Tour.

Once you get past the frustration of getting things right then it is fun for a while. It’s not going to be an everyday game for most kids. Even with girls, like I have said, unless it’s an issue where they are Hannah Montana obsessed, they will play briefly and then move on to something else. As good as this idea was, limiting it to one artist, with a limited amount of songs, limited the product itself.

Bottom Line:
If I was going to recommend this it would have to be on a limited basis. Based on what I saw with Lil B, I would say it would work for (primarily) girls from the ages of six to nine. Girls a little younger might like it and a few that are older might, too though I would think this would be the prime age for this toy. The child has to like a challenge and not give up, because going through the tutorials and getting all the movements down can be rough. They will have to work at it a little bit. Fans will enjoy this, but make sure they truly love Hannah otherwise this won’t be worth the money.

Ease of Use: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Fun Factor: 3 out of 5 stars

Manufacturer: KidDesigns
Price: $39.99 at Amazon

I knew that this was going to be a hit long before we got a Botley in our hands. We did a review for My First Adventures, another Jump Start toy and when we did that we had a chance to see Botley. Lil B wouldn’t stop talking about him. “Look at that Robot!” “Hey, who is that Robot, I want that!” So, naturally when we received it I was incredibly excited because I knew how much fun he was going to have with the “real Botley.

The first thing you notice is just how cool this robot looks. Botley is a cute toy. Lil B was hoping that it would be able to walk around and follow his commands and though it can’t (I knew that it wouldn’t be able to), once he got over that he had plenty of fun. Most stores have labeled Botley as being perfect for three to five year olds and I have to admit that surprised me a little bit.

While this age range will absolutely adore Botley, they will need some help learning to use him and parents will too, with a distinct possibility that some reading is required to get him working. Meanwhile, the manufacturer recommends Botley for ages four and up. After watching Lil B I would say this is good for kids between the ages of four and possibly eight. I don’t think kids older than eight or nine would find much enjoyment in Botley, though that will depend on the child.

Still, beyond younger kids needing a little help using him initially, there is nothing wrong with Botley. Kids love him and adults will enjoy the fact that this toy is relatively inexpensive while offering plenty of safe and friendly activities. Kid Designs is quickly becoming one of the most popular choices for us to find Lil B safe and fun toys in his age range.

Positives & Negatives:

Positives:
Great for kids that love robots
Non-violent
Works well for solo or group play
Good for boys or girls
Educational
Challenging
Inventive
Promotes learning and independence
Movable head and adjustable arms
Fairly priced

Negatives:
Might be too challenging for younger kids
None other that I can think of

Pricing & Availability:
The Jump Start World Growing Smart Laugh with Me Botley is priced at $39.99 at stores like Toys R Us, Amazon, and just about everywhere else that I have looked. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding this. I haven’t looked locally, but I bet if I did I would find it. If you live in an average to big city I am sure that you won’t have any problem finding it either. If you cannot find it, Botley seems to be well stocked online so that is always another option.

Based on the toy and all that it can do, I would have no qualms about paying $40 for this. While $40 seems like a lot these days, it is obvious that Botley is durable enough and fun enough to ensure that it is worth the purchase. Ultimately, you’d buy any other toy of similar function and size as Botley for around the same price, if not for more.

Requirements & Instructions:
The only requirement to get Jump Start World Growing Smart Laugh with Me Botley working out of the box is a set of batteries, which are included when you purchase this toy. Both kids and parents should enjoy the fact that you can work this toy right out of the box. We didn’t have any problems getting him going. Lil B did need some help when it came to figuring out how to use Botley. This is mainly because a little bit of reading is required and he cannot read yet. However, once he figured out how to handle Botley it was smooth sailing from there.

Durability:
Jump Start World Growing Smart Laugh with Me Botley is pretty sturdy for the most part. It’s not something so flimsy that it’s going to break, but I don’t recommend throwing this around for fun either. It’s made of hard plastic, but it’s relatively lightweight so you will want to watch it if your child is kind of rough on their toys. Otherwise, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. It should be able to handle any basic drops and accidents without any problem.

Ease of Use:
We went through the instructions to learn how to use the buttons and the remote, but once we knew exactly what to do things were just fine. If your child is not able to read you might want to use this with them, at first. Once they have basic reading skills or become familiar with some of the various games they won’t have any problem playing this on their own. The games and activities vary, but there are at least 30 things that kids can enjoy with Botley.

Some of these games and activities will be more popular than others, but there are plenty of options to enjoy. The first time using Jump Start World Growing Smart Laugh with Me Botley will definitely be the hardest. After that, it will just be a matter of your child becoming familiar enough that they no longer need your help to enjoy him. Additionally, if your child has an older brother or sister, this might be a good activity for them to enjoy together.

Fun Factor & Overall Appeal:
Jump Start World Growing Smart Laugh with Me Botley managed to be fun on it’s own without even working for quite a few minutes. Lil B squirmed until we got Botley out of the box and then he moved him around the floor and did the Wall-E robot voice for quite some time. After we got it started we did some of the activities. He enjoyed the math games and quizzes the most.

Kids are able to cure Botley’s computer bugs by answering questions and Lil B loved this. He also enjoyed being able to move Botley’s head and seeing his eyebrows and mouth move when it did. Lil B would play a game or two and then he and Botley would go to someone else in the house, so that he could play with them.

When he plays with Botley in his room, I have peeked in to find him talking to Botley while he plays one of the activities. It’s more than just a game or a robot. To Lil B, Botley is a friend. When we use Botley, I find that Lil B uses the remote more so that he can stand Botley up and doesn’t have to hold him while playing the whole time.

This is one of his favorite toys that he received around the holidays. I’ve seen him quite a few times since then and he always seems to have Botley with him. While we received Jump Start World Growing Smart Laugh with Me Botley for review, I would have been more than happy to purchase it as it’s one of his favorite toys!

Bottom Line:
Jump Start World Growing Smart Laugh with Me Botley is one of the best preschool toys that we tested in 2008. It is educational, fun, friendly, and it’s a robot! Young children love this robot and I can’t say that I blame them. This is a fairly priced toy that offers plenty of activities. It’s durable, relatively easy to use, and young children just love Botley. The important thing though is that they learn while they play with him. If you want your child to practice their upcoming school subjects and brush up on their skills, Botley will befriend them and help them to learn in the most fun way possible!
