Confession: I hate earbuds. In fact, over the numerous reviews that I have done, there is only one pair that I have ever received that I have ever truly loved. I have always preferred headphones to earbuds, though over the years I have noticed earbuds slowly starting to take over the market. Lately though, it seems that classic, high definition headphones are coming back into style. The latest pair we have received for review are from Harmon International. The AKG K 172 HD Headphones are sure to be a fan favorite with music lovers.

Harmon International offers a number of earbud and headphone options in price ranges that will suit most consumers. At the lower end of the scale you can pick up some earbuds for under $30. The headphone prices range from under $100 to as much as $299. The AKG K 172′s are available for $199.95.
Knowing the price of these headphones and having my mother’s consumer sense, made me immediately question the worth of the product. I’ve used 100s of pairs of headphones and earbuds in my day, but really??? $200???? How could one pair of stereo headphones ever be worth that much money? My entire stereo didn’t even cost that much, though granted I do really need a new one!
No matter what the specs say (they were impressive enough for me to want to review these, and are listed below) I knew that the real test would be what they sound like. I made sure to listen to a wide range of music. I am a fan of limited Pop, 80s music, R&B, Rap, Alternative, Heavy Metal, and even some Country. In short, if it has a good beat and good lyrics I am willing to listen to it. Listening to various types of music gave me a chance to really see the worth of AKG headphones.
While most headphones offer a less than organic sound, AKG headphones go above and beyond to offer a concert in your ears. I kept switching genres of music trying to find a musical deficit to these headphones, but no matter what I played, the music always sounded amazing. This remained true no matter what volume the music was on, too. So many times something might sound good at a lower volume, but distort as the sound becomes higher. That is definitely not the case with these headphones.
Technical Specs:

Loud and rugged; Ideal for single-ear DJ use
Hard gold-plated contacts and plug with 1/8″/1/4″ adapter

Frequency response: 18Hz – 26kHz
I wore these for a few hours a few times in order to craft this review and more than a few times at smaller intervals and was shocked to find how comfortable they were. It’s good to know that you could wear these headphones for hours with no discomfort. The velvet ear pads and the adjustable soft upper band ensure maximum comfort and a good fit for the whole house.
If you’re looking for headphones that offer premium comfort and a true, concert sound no matter your volume level, you have to look to Harmon International and their AKG headphones. Once you try them nothing else will match up (and if something does, I haven’t found it yet).
