Review: Funky Monkey Snacks

July 14, 2010 5 Comments »

The evolution of eating organic has been a slow one in our house. While we all love the idea of moving to an organic diet, $6 for a gallon of milk is a hard pill to swallow. So for now, while we are unfortunately not independently wealthy, we buy what we can and try to be as organically frugal as possible in the process.

Dom is the snacker in the family. Well, I am the one to get caught the most in the cookie jar, but he is the one most likely to request traditional snack type foods. He loves the fruit snacks and kid-friendly fare that a lot of adults tend to leave behind.

Funky Monkey

So, when Funky Monkey, a fruit snack company that attempts to make all of their products at least partially organic contacted us for a review, I decided to give them a whirl. Personally, I could go either way when it comes to dried fruit snacks (I am a gummy kind of girl), but Funky Monkey offers freeze dried fruits that retain a satisfying crunch. It was the crunch that got me and made me want to try these.

If you’re worried about the health value of snacks, you will be happy to know that the freeze drying process used by Funky Monkey ensures that all of the nutrients often taken out of fruits in the drying process are retained. These crunchy snacks are healthy enough to make any mom happy, but crunchy enough to fool the kids into thinking they are getting junk food.

Better news comes with the fact that almost all of the Funky Monkey snacks are 100% organic. More specifically, the least organic snack offered is the Carnaval Mix, which is still 70% organic. Pink Pineapple comes next at 95% organic and the Bananamon, JiveALime and Purple Funk are 100% organic. All other flavors are all natural.

Funky Monkey Flavors

Speaking of flavors, there are seven main types to choose from:

Applemon – Apple with Cinnamon
Bananamon – Banana with Cinnamon
MangOJ – Mango with Orange Juice
Pink Pineapple – Pineapple and Guava
Carnaval Mix – Banana, Pineapple, Apple & Papaya
Purple Funk – Banana with Acai
JiveALime – Pineapple with Lime

Each package is 100% fat free with no sugar added. They are made from 100% real fruit. It doesn’t get much better than this.

I figured Dom would like these, but I am shocked and thrilled to say that I love them, as much, if not more. The Bananmon had me on the fence at first because I liked them, but I wasn’t sure that they were something that I would continue to eat once our review packages were gone. The flavor that changed my mind was the JiveALime. This pack of sour yumminess is just plain addictive. Lucky for me that the small packs we received were only about 45 calories because I practically at the whole thing!

Depending on your location you shouldn’t have any problem finding Funky Monkey Snacks when you are out and about. You can find them in such stores as Target, Acme, Albertsons, Kroger, Whole Foods, and Safeway. Online you can pick them up at Amazon.com and other retailers.

If you’re looking for a healthy snack that is full of flavor you should definitely check these out. They offer an awesome crunch, they taste great, and they have flavors that most will enjoy. As an unrelated side note, I just have to say that having your logo involve a monkey that looks like a Pimp (the hats a nice touch) is just plain cool.
