Stay Grounded: Use Talk over Text

June 28, 2010 No Comments »

VTech® Communications recently conducted a survey concerning talk vs. text usage. The results are pretty self-explanatory. A whopping 97 percent of participants believe talking regularly is important for healthy relationships. Not only that, but over sixty percent want to use the phone more in order to stay in touch with their friends and family rather than using Facebook, texting, and other social media options.

With this information in mind, VTech has launched StayGrounded.com, a place where consumers will be able to learn about building strong relationships through good communication. Relationship expert and developmental psychologist Dr. Michelle R. Callahan will be on hand to offer advice and to answer what questions you might have. StayGrounded.com also offers visitors a chance to win a weekend getaway in San Francisco to nurture a relationship with that special someone.

According to Dr. Michelle

“The brief connections through socially networked technologies or text messaging sometimes give us a false sense of being connected, without really connecting,” says Dr. Michelle, host of syndicated daytime talk show Wedlock or Deadlock and author of Ms. Typed: Stop Sabotaging Your Relationships and Find Dating Success (Three Rivers Press, 2010). “These services don’t replace the time and intimate conversations needed to nurture and develop closer relationships. Sometimes we have to pick up the phone and call our loved ones to show them that we really are interested in their lives and well-being.”

Some of the most interesting statistics from the survey include:
66% said breaking up with a significant other had to be done in conversation – 72% of this number were women!
55% said announcing an engagement should be done by phone vs. email, text or social networks
78% said they feel that big relationship changes should be reported by phone if not in-person
71% said new jobs and promotions should be announced via phone
68% said that miscommunication happens less when using the phone
21% said that if you cannot use the phone, email is the next best option
