Last year for the holidays my brother bought my mom one of those photo albums that loads up the photos digitally. I remember how excited she was to get it. I also remember the blank stare and look of pseudo-panic at the thought of getting the photos that she wanted on to the frame. After a good laugh we helped her, but a similar look came up when she saw the Sharper Image Digital Photo Keychain when it was brought into the office for review.
You see, mom isn’t very technically savvy, if you know what I mean. In fact, she could use a lot of work. We got her a new computer last year and she’s learned how to play Pogo, but other than that we are taking baby steps. She loves the technology she just doesn’t know how to use it. That being said, if you’re planning on giving a gift like this to someone that is not familiar with technology you might want to do them a favor and open it and load it for them, so that they do not have to worry about doing it on their own.
The Sharper Image Digital Photo Keychain is fairly inexpensive for this type of keychain. I have seen others range from $50-$75, but this one is around the $30 mark, which is not bad at all. I didn’t load it up completely, but I will say that I had room for more pictures after I had already loaded about 40 of them. I was impressed by the amount of pictures that it held. The screen is small, as it is a keychain, but the pictures were relatively clear. It’s not the same as having them blown up, of course, but if you’re buying this for someone that hates carrying pictures, but still likes to show them off, then this is perfect.
In order to get this to work you will need to load a CD into your computer and install some software. The steps are not that hard and they certainly aren’t time consuming unless you’re going through all of your digital photo albums, but that doesn’t count. If you’re buying this for someone that is scared of technology or has trouble working a VCR you might want to help them.
Despite it not being hard to handle, some people just aren’t comfortable with computers and that will make it harder for them to use this keychain. Once the keychain has been set up they won’t have anything to worry about, however, if you’re giving this to them in the plastic with just instructions to guide them, they might have a breakdown.
The Sharper Image Digital Keychain is rechargeable and I felt like the charge time dragged on a little longer than I would like, but since money is being saved, I feel it’s a minor complaint. This is perfect for moms, dads, and people that have plenty of pictures to show off when they are out on the town. I have yet to meet a person that didn’t love these types of keychains. Now, if you couldn’t afford these types of keychains before, you have a better chance of being able to buy one, thanks to Sharper Image.
