Nickelodeon Celebrates 10 Years of the fantastic SpongeBob SquarePants

VH1 will be airing a one hour documentary in July and Nickelodeon is planning a Spongebob bash that includes a whopping 50 hours of programming in one long stretch!

Fans of Spongebob will not want to miss this impressive marathon because it will include 11 new Spongebob premieres. You can also check out plenty of extensive digital content on the Internet.

Ten years ago, on July 17, 1999, the first episode of Spongebob Squarepants aired on Nickelodeon. Who knew that one episode would change the face of cartoons and last for a decade only to still be going strong? Today, ten years later, Spongebob is one of the few cartoons on television that both children and adults adore.

Nickelodeon understands how much fans love Spongebob so to celebrate his ten year anniversary they will be having what they have deemed, the “Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash Weekend.” From July 17-19, Nickelodeon will be airing 50 hours of Spongebob hosted by Patchy the Pirate!

Fans of Spongebob won’t want to miss this because it will include 11 new Spongebob premieres and a top ten countdown of celebrities’ favorite Spongebob episodes. Additionally, on July 14th at 9 PM Eastern (8 Central) VH1 will be airing the first official Spongebob TV documentary, Square Roots: The Story of Spongebob Squarepants.

According to Nickelodeon:

Since its launch in July 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has emerged as a pop culture phenomenon with 70 million viewers monthly, and has been the number-one animated program with Kids 2-11 for more than seven consecutive years. The show is seen in 171 markets in 25 languages and is the most widely distributed property in MTV Networks’ history.

If you are planning to watch the Ultimate Spongebob SpongeBash Weekend here is a rundown of what you can expect:

Things begin on July 14, at 9 PM when Square Roots: The Story of Spongebob Sqarepants airs on VH1. This documentary is the work of producer, Creadon O’Malley. The documentary takes you on a journey from the first episode all the way to Spongebob’s mark on pop culture. Spongebob manages to make an impression on everyone and you see that here. Some highlights include the impression made on kids around the world, the President, and even some inmates in San Quentin that have a tendency to sing the Spongebob theme song.

The documentary will begin with a song from Avril Lavigne and will include commentary from Steve Hillenburg, experts, fans, cast, crew, and even such celebrities as Rosario Dawson, LeBron James, and Ricky Gervais.

Later in the week, on July 17, starting at 8 PM, the 50 hour marathon begins with the premiere of “To Squarepants or Not to Squarepants.” You will have a chance to see Spongebob ponder what to do when his square pant shrink in the dryer. He tries to find some new square pants, but when the search becomes fruitless he tries some round pants, but no one knows who he is when he is Spongebob RoundPants.

On Saturday promptly at 10 AM you can catch the top ten most memorable episodes picked by fans on Nick.com. As the evening wears down on Saturday you can catch the Spongebob Movie at 8 PM.

On Sunday at 10 AM you will have a chance to check out the ten favorite episodes picked by celebrities. After all of that, you will want to make sure to be tuned in at 7 PM when ten all new episodes premiere!

There is still MORE coming up!

Nickelodeon’s celebration will continue this fall with the debut an hour-long TV movie event, “Truth or Square,” featuring celebrity guest stars Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Craig Ferguson, and Robin Williams, among others. The special finds SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and Mr. Krabs locked inside a giant freezer on the night of the Krusty Krab’s anniversary celebration.
