Food Review: Log Cabin Syrup

Growing up, one of my favorite school lunch days was Waffles and Sausage day. Looking back, I remember the kids going wild. I can only imagine that it had something to do with being allowed something so blatantly sweet and justifying it by calling it lunch. I am not sure when it happened, but at some point I developed a distaste for syrup. I don’t hate it, but I never use it. Since this new taste has developed I have considered syrup to taste too sweet. I occasionally indulge in French toast or pancakes, but it is never more than once or twice a year.

CT loves pancakes though. He likes French toast and French toast sticks, too. He even likes Eggo waffles. So, one thing we always have in the house is syrup. The kind we buy varies, though he seems to be partial to Mrs. Butterworth’s. In any case, he is willing to eat other brands as long as he is familiar with them. Being that he is a picky eater with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, I try not to spring too many things on him without letting him know first.

To prepare him for this review, we made some Blueberry pancakes and had a little conversation that went something like this.

Me: “Log Cabin sent us some syrup to try out and review.”

CT: “Hmmm. I think I want the other kind that we have. Mrs. Butterworth’s.”

Me: “This Log Cabin is special. They got rid of the High Fructose Corn Syrup and they want families to tell people about whether they like it or not.”

At this point, CT ponders. He is picky, but he loves being part of our reviews.

CT: “Well, I guess I can try a little bit.”

He’s also big into what he’s eating, so the fact that it had no High Fructose Corn Syrup was a huge bonus for him.

Log Cabin has been in the syrup business for over 120 years. While I haven’t bought Log Cabin in a long time, I can see why they are one of the most popular brands. They really seem to go out of their way to try and make a product that will suit all people. Among the types of syrup they offer, you can choose from Lite, Sugar Free, Pure Maple Syrup, and the all new Original which is now free of HFCS.

The important thing though is that everyone in the family loved the new Log Cabin syrup. CT had no problem with his pancakes and has since eaten some more, which is a definite sign that he liked it. Even Dominick tried the new syrup, and he does not like any kind of syrup (or pancakes, French toast, etc.). He thought the syrup tasted better than most syrups he’s tried, but I’ll be hard pressed to get him to eat more of it considering he doesn’t like most of the foods you eat with syrup.

The thing I liked the most about the new Original Log Cabin syrup was that it wasn’t as sweet as most syrups. It still offered the pleasing maple taste, but I didn’t feel the cavities coming on with every bite. I would have absolutely no problem buying Log Cabin in the future.

Considering the fact that Log Cabin has dropped the HFCS the end result is a healthier product for your entire family. Now add in the fact that it tastes delicious and you have a big winner! I highly recommend checking out the new and improved Log Cabin syrup, especially if your family uses a lot of syrup. This gives you a chance to let the kids enjoy the foods they love, but you have the secret satisfaction of knowing that they aren’t as bad for them as they could be.
