Growing up in the 80s was amazing because there were so many great cartoons. These days it feels like cartoons are a shell of what they were back then. Sure, there are some funny moments, but a lot of the cartoons are either rehashed ideas of what was on back then or they are just plain un-funny. Every now and then a cartoon sneaks through though and becomes a gem amongst the rough and unpolished cartoons of today. Phineas and Ferb is one of those gems.

Phineas and Ferb was created by Dan Povenmire. Anyone familiar with Family Guy may recognize that name because he also created that show. With a creator like that, it’s pretty much guaranteed that Phineas and Ferb is something worth watching. Kids will love the inventive step-brothers, Phineas and Ferb, who are just trying to enjoy their summer and their bossy sister, Candace, (Ashley Tisdale) who tries (unsuccessfully in most cases) to thwart their fun.

Best of all, the show works out by being funny. In fact, it is so funny, it is something the entire family can enjoy, together. It’s not going to be one of those things that you watch for your children. This one you will want to watch all on your own, and those tend to be the best shows of all. If nothing else, they certainly provide the most family fun.

The Phineas & Ferb: The Fast & the Phineas Plot
Phineas Flynn (Vincent Martella) and Ferb Fletcher (Thomas Sangster) are step brothers that live with their older sister Candace Flynn (Tisdale), their mom Linda Flynn (Caroline Rhea) and their dad Lawrence Fletcher (Richard O’Brien). Living in Danville, Illinois and having summer vacation leads the boys to find as much creative trouble as they possibly can. They are seen building elaborate haunted houses, creating beaches in their backyard, and racing the family car in a racing competition. They even find time in the midst of all this to create a summer one hit wonder and retire before the summer ends.

As all of this goes on Candace tries to make herself more available to her crush Jeremy (Mitchel Musso) and tries to get the boys in trouble with their mom. Unfortunately, Candace would do better befriending her brothers because she certainly never manages to get them caught in the act.

The following episodes are included on the Phineas and Ferb: The Fast and the Phineas DVD.

“One Good Scare Ought to Do It!”: Phineas and Ferb decide to help Isabella (Alyson Stoner) get rid of her hiccups. When nothing seems to work the boys decide to build the scariest haunted house ever, to ensure that her hiccups go away. The audience learns that Perry the Platypus (Dee Bradley Baker) has a secret identity. He’s a secret agent trying to find the secret (but easy to find) hideout of his mortal enemy, Doofenshmirtz (Povenmire).

“The Fast and the Phineas/Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror”: The boys enter their mom’s car into a racing competition. While this is going on, Perry the Platypus (Dee Bradley Baker) must defeat Doofenshmirtz to make sure that he doesn’t deflate all things inflatable. In the second half of the episode, “Lawn Gnome Beach Party” Phineas and Ferb decide it’s time for a beach party and proceed to build a tropical paradise in their backyard. The party is so good not even Candace can complain.

“Are you my Mummy?/FlopStarz”: After watching a movie at the movie theater, the boys decide to get a mummy. However, what they end up with is Candace wrapped in toilet paper. Meanwhile, Perry has to stop Doofenshmirtz from flooding the city to make some beachfront property. Later, in “Flopstarz” the guys realize that summer cannot be complete without a one hit wonder. So they put their creative genius together and create Phineas and the Ferb-tones. Candace ends up winning a chance to sing with the band, but before she knows it, her one chance at fame is gone when Phineas and the Ferb-tones go into retirement.

“Raging Bully/Lights, Candace, Action!”: The local bully gets some action when Phineas takes him on in thumb wrestling. In the second half of the episode, “Lights, Candace, Action” Candace stars in “The Princess Sensibilities”, or at least she was planning on it until her directors (guess who) decide to make the film more interesting. Meanwhile Perry is off to save the day again, this time when Doofenshmirtz creates an Age Acceleratorinator.

“It’s about Time”: Phineas and Ferb find a time machine that transports them back to the Jurassic Age. They also accidentally bring along Candace and the time machine just happens to work by electricity. As if that wasn’t funny enough, Perry ends up on a talk show, discussing his sadness at the fact that Doofenshmirtz has a new nemesis – Peter the Panda.

Audio/Visual:
The visual quality for Phineas and Ferb was actually pretty impressive. Normally cartoons will look decent but not great. However, the 1.33:1 aspect ratio looks great here. The colors are as bright as you would expect from a cartoon and the visual quality is bright and clear overall. I didn’t notice any compression errors or any other troubles that might have hindered enjoyable viewing. It’s obvious that Disney took the care that all companies should take when pumping out these DVDs.

The audio quality comes in with Dolby Digital Stereo sound and like the visual quality, things work well in this department. The sound effects come through beautifully, the dialogue sounds excellent, and everything works just like it should. Phineas and Ferb does not offer additional languages or subtitles. However, Closed Captioning should work just fine.

Visual: ★★★★½
Audio: ★★★★☆

Bonus Features:
There are a few bonus features here, which means there are more than the average cartoon that is put on DVD seems to offer. The adults in the room will probably enjoy the original pitch by Dan Povenmire. Povenmire goes through all of the voices on his own during his pitch and it’s actually quite funny listening to him and his reasoning for the show.

Meanwhile, kids will enjoy the Phineas and Ferb Homemade Tree Shade Arcade. There are a few games and activities to choose from in this section. The games are all custom-made and the kids will enjoy playing them at least for a little while. They aren’t so in depth that the kids will be trying to play them like they would a video game, but they will be able to enjoy them for awhile after watching the DVD.

Bonus Features: ★★★½☆

Bottom Line:
I don’t find myself trying to watch too many children’s shows these days, but when I am flipping the channels I find myself looking for Phineas and Ferb. This is a great DVD for kids that like cartoons with a little spunk to them. Another thing that makes this so great is that parents will probably find the show enjoyable, as well. This comes highly recommended for new Phineas and Ferb viewers and fans that love the show already.

Overall Rating: ★★★★½
