SpongeBob SquarePants lives in a pineapple under the sea. Not only that, but he is perhaps the craziest sponge you will ever meet. He has an active life working at a fast food restaurant and hanging with his friends Patrick, a Starfish, and Sandy, a squirrel who lives underwater with the help of a fish bowl over her head.
While it is assumed he is an adult, you cannot help but notice that SpongeBob tends to act like a three year old on a sugar high. In truth, that is part of his charm. When SpongeBob was first released he was a crowd pleaser. Years later, he is still a hit with the smaller kids, but some of the bigger ones need more convincing.
As far as cartoons go, SpongeBob has a lot of good points. However, when it comes to smaller DVDs like this, the purchase may end up being pointless. As SpongeBob is one of the cartoons to release season sets of the cartoon onto DVD, often these smaller episodic sets end up being pointless. However, if you have a young SpongeBob lover in the house, you may get plenty of mileage out of a DVD like this until the entire season is released on DVD.
Release Information:
SpongeBob SquarePants: To Love a Patty was released on DVD on January 29, 2008 by Paramount and Nickelodeon. This set of SpongeBob SquarePants includes seven full episodes and a short list of special features. You can pick this DVD up at Amazon, as well as most major online and offline retailers.
The Spongebob Squarepants: To Love a Patty Plot
I am going to bypass the standard information about the series, assuming that 99.9% of parents know who SpongeBob SquarePants is and what his show is about. If you are unfamiliar with him, feel free to look up our reviews of the first half of the fifth season and Atlantis Squarepantis.
So, rather than delving into all of that we will go straight to the episode recap for all seven episodes on this somewhat disappointing disc.
“To Love a Patty”: The episode that is the reason for this entire disc has SpongeBob falling head over heels in love with a krabby patty that he makes. While amusing in theory, the musical number that is included is utterly cheesy and the fact that SpongeBob doesn’t catch that at some point he is carrying around moldy meat is just beyond me. I know love is blind, but not that blind.
“A Flea in her Dome”: If you are like me and dislike that randy Texas squirrel, Sandy, then this episode won’t be too thrilling for you. This time around Sandy comes home from a visit to Texas with a case of the fleas. Sandy ends up locked in her tree dome while SpongeBob and Patrick try helping her to get rid of her pesky problem.
“Mermaidman vs. Spongebob”: Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy are brainwashed at the hands of Plankton. Together, these two vow to destroy the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob has to rush in and save the day. Whether he does that, remains to be seen.
“Le Big Switch”: SpongeBob and a French Chef are swapped. The French Chef heads to the Krusty Krab, where he makes some unsavory changes that lead to problems. Meanwhile, SpongeBob ends up in a French kitchen where he learns that the only thing he can make is a Krabby patty.
“The Donut of Shame”: Patrick and SpongeBob have a crazy night of partying (tea partying, that is) and end up passing out. When Patrick wakes up, SpongeBob is holding the best looking donut he has seen (today), so he ends up stealing it! The question is, can he live with the guilt?
“Blackjack”: SpongeBob’s ex-con cousin is in town and he’s kidnapped SpongeBob’s parents! SpongeBob has to go on the lookout for Blackjack otherwise, who knows what will happen! This is by far one of the least amusing on this set.
“Blackened Sponge”: When SpongeBob is trying to get the cap off his toothpaste he ends up getting a black eye. Rather than admitting the truth, he makes up a lie so grand he ends up believing it himself!
I have always loved SpongeBob, but this set I really could take or leave. There are many other DVDs out there with a better selection of episodes than what you will find here. It’s worth it to look for one of those unless you know the kids like these specific episodes.

Audio/Visual:
The episodes available on SpongeBob SquarePants: To Love a Patty appear in fullscreen. The video is better than what you would expect to see on television, though not by much. There is minimal grain and the colors are bright. Overall there is little problem with the visual aspects of this DVD.
The audio sounds pretty much the same as it does on television. The track is presented as Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo. While not amazing, it does get the job done and there is no problem hearing or understanding what’s going on.

Bonus Features:
There are a couple of special features available on this disc. The first feature is a full-length version of the episode for To Love a Patty. The other main feature is a karaoke music piece for To Love a Patty.

Bottom Line:
This set of SpongeBob is somewhat disappointing in comparison to the other seasons and discs that have been released in the past. I won’t say I hate it because I don’t. However, I would consider whether the purchase has a point. There are several discs and seasons of this show that have been released on DVD that will get you more laughs than this disc will. I highly recommend renting this one first or making sure that you like the episodes before picking this one up. Otherwise, you might find that you bought this DVD for nothing and there are plenty of others you wish you would have picked up instead.
