Toy Review: K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set

K'Nex Fun RidesBuilding toys don’t always have to be for kids. They can be for adults, too. I found this out when I had the chance to receive a red case filled with K’Nex building objects. There are some small pieces that can be built into intricate, amazing designs. With the building sets, you have the ability to follow the picture models included with the case, or you can build anything you want, of your own creation. I chose to build a model first, to figure out what pieces fit together the best. Then I went on to build something of my own creation. Let me tell you, building with K’Nex is quite a workout…but a fun one!

It’s fun to play with another person, especially someone who is younger and who has imagination when it comes to building. My 13 year old son loves to build with Legos, Megablocks, and now K’Nex. He’s into building intricate patterns and objects that have depth and 3D characterizations. He was right at home, enjoying playing with the K’Nex as soon as the durable, red box they came in was opened and the parts were removed from the bag they are sealed in within the box.

Requirements:
The K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set is recommended for those who are 5 and up. While the video for the toy says it is recommended for ages 5-7 specifically, trust me when I say that older kids, teens and even adults will get enjoyment out of playing with these toys. The K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set has close to 200 pieces, many of which are small, so this toy isn’t recommended for small children due to a potential choking hazard. The toy has small and large building blocks, circular figures (that look kind of like paddle wheels/half wheels), connecting bars, micro K’Nex parts, and more.

K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set comes with a durable, red, carrying case. There is a manual included with instructions and pictures for 10 models, that can be built using the parts in this set. The ability to create is endless, with the opportunity for kids to expand beyond the 10 models and build their own inventive fun rides with spinning, swinging parts to them.

Basics:
K’Nex are cooler than most of the other building blocks out there. You can check out this specific set of K’Nex at the K’Nex website. When I was in college, the engineers at my university used K’Nex to build models. Some of their designs were incredibly intricate. The K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set not only is fun to play with, it helps improve fine motor skills and it works on creativity. Your children develop problem solving skills as they work out what part goes where. They also can learn about the building process, science and a whole lot more.

The pieces all appear to be well made. They seem to be quite sturdy and hold together well. Taking the pieces apart isn’t too difficult and putting them together seems to be done in an innovative way since micro parts, regular parts, and new, inventive parts are available in one terrific set. Overall, kids shouldn’t have any problem using the K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set.

In Depth Information:
The pieces in the K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set might be difficult for those with mobility impairments to use without assistance. As someone with a muscle disease, it was sometimes hard to push the pieces together and pull them apart. I will say that when I compare them with both Legos and Megablocks, which I’ve tried to use, as well, K’Nex are, by far, the easiest of all of the products to use. The building process is excellent physical or occupational therapy for anyone who is having trouble with fine motor skills, whether they have a mobility impairment or not. I give these blocks my disability seal of approval for that reason, though parents and siblings may have to help with some of the connecting and/or pulling apart for children with extremely limited mobility. Still the design process is quite fun.

Bottom Line:
K’Nex is now my favorite building company. I should have known, the company who made Lincoln Logs (a favorite when I was growing up) would make the innovative, fun building pieces in the K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set. I could play with the K’Nex for hours and so could my son. It’s a great time for us to bond and we’re both able to work on our fine motor skills, without having it seem like a chore or work. Whether you have a child with a disability or not, I highly recommend the K’Nex Fun Rides 10 Model Building Set. Every child from age five until adulthood will find a fun way to build with this set. This toy is highly recommended.
