This holiday, give the gift of laughter, adventure, and excitement through one of the many kid-friendly DVDs that have been released this year. There have been many great DVDs released in 2007, especially for children. You can purchase everything from good, wholesome family fun, to some of the more snarky kid comedies for older children and teenagers to enjoy. However, this year just remember that quality is more important than quantity when picking out DVDs for your children.
This gift giving guide is listed in no particular order. We hope you enjoy our list, and happy shopping during the wonderful holiday season.
| #1 – The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause
In what is believed to be the last of the Santa Clause trio of films, Scott Calvin a.k.a. Santa Claus (Tim Allen) realizes just how important Christmas and his family are to him when he nearly loses everything to a conniving, spiteful Jack Frost (Martin Short). This movie is filled with marshmallow-y goodness and plenty of sugar plums to boot. Being Santa Claus was never an easy job, but it is one that Scott Calvin has come to love. Now, as he prepares for the birth of his second child (his first with Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell)) and Christmas, he must go to the end of the Earth (the North Pole) to keep his family safe and get his job back before his life becomes exactly what he hoped it’d never be again. | #2 – Wonderpets!: Save the Reindeer
Wonderpets! Wonderpets! We’re on our way! To save a baby reindeer the Wonderpets will travel to the North Pole. Nickelodeon released Wonderpets!: Save the Reindeer in October. Nevertheless, this adorable, kid-friendly photo-animation DVD has made our top ten list, merely because it is just plain adorable. If your children love the Wonderpets then this is a must have DVD. With Linny, Tuck, and Ming-Ming the adventures never end. Of course, Ming-Ming is hilarious on this DVD, and kids will really enjoy the additional episodes included once the reindeer has been saved. This DVD will delight children (and even some teenagers) with its adorable animation and fun characters. To read our review of Wonderpets!: Save the Reindeer click here. |
| #3 – Ducktales – Volume Three
Ducktales was one of the greatest cartoons of its time. From the cantankerous yet amusing Uncle Scrooge to the adorable Huey, Dewey, and Louie, this DVD is a winner from the get go. As parents reminisce about watching Ducktales when they were younger, they now have the chance to introduce the show to a new generation of children; their own kids! Disney just recently released the latest volumes of both Ducktales and the popular Disney show, Talespin. The two sets would make a wonderful addition to any family’s DVD collection and DvDs always make great stocking stuffers! To read our review of Ducktales – Volume Three, click here. |
| #4 – Meet the Robinsons
The Future has arrived. One of the most heartfelt, well developed, and well written Disney movies of all time, Meet the Robinsons, has just been released on DVD. This movie has re-established why Disney is still one of the best animation studios in Hollywood. Meet the Robinsons has a solid story, a great plot, and plenty of excellent voices. You won’t want to miss owning Meet the Robinsons on DVD. When Lewis is attempting to find his birth mother through his science inventions, he comes across a very strange boy, Wilbur, who claims to be from the future. With Wilbur’s help, Lewis tries to find the family he’s always longed to have. To read the LI Kids review of Meet the Robinsons click here. |
| #5 – Charlie and Lola, Vol. 6 – How Many More Minutes Until Christmas
Though they’re drawn in a crude style reminiscent (but better) than the likes of South Park that is where the similarity to the adult cartoon and Charlie & Lola ends. Two British children, Charlie (9 or 10?) and his little sister, Lola (5), have many adventures. There is one, double length episode on this DVD called “How Many More Minutes Until Christmas” as well as multiple, additional 15 minute episodes of the show. Charlie is the older brother of a very funny, sweet, five year old named Lola. Charlie, the patient, caring, older brother teaches Lola about Christmas and other life lessons in this charming cartoon. Teaching life lessons and family values, we recommend Charlie and Lola, Vol. 6 – How Many More Minutes Until Christmas to any family. |

| #7 – The Carebears 25th Anniversary DVDs
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Carebears, Lionsgate and American Greetings have been putting out several DVDs throughout the last few months. All of the DVDs have something in common. They show episodes of the Carebears from the original 1980s television show. As children of the 80s we couldn’t be any happier about these releases and we’re not alone! The big hurrah was the release of the 25th Anniversary edition gift set, which includes four DVDs and a 25th anniversary edition Carebear. However, plenty of other Carebears DVDs have been released on their own this year and you need to own them all! Some of the DVDs include Fitness Fun, The Gift of Caring, Friends Forever, and more! |
| #8 – Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Book Two Collection
The popularity of the Nickelodeon show, Avatar: The Last Airbender has been unprecedented. Now, in this full collection, the 20 episodes that make up Season Two of the show are available on DVD. Sure, this came out a few months ago, but kids who haven’t had the chance to receive a copy of the DVD box set for Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Book Two Collection will love finding it in their Christmas stockings. | #9 – Peter Pan: Return to Neverland
We really liked Peter Pan: Return to Neverland. While we aren’t usually fans of sequels to animated Disney classics, Peter Pan: Return to Neverland really held its own in the story department. Fans of Peter Pan and Disney animation movies in general need to own this DVD this Christmas. This is going to become one of the Disney treasuries greatest sequels and should become a classic in its own right. Peter Pan: Return to Neverland introduces the daughter of Peter Pan’s dear friend, Wendy, a little girl named Jane who doesn’t believe in fairies and thinks the whole Neverland “fantasy” is childish. She believes the Lost Boys should grow up and act their age. While Jane wants to go home from Neverland, she can’t fly and Peter won’t take her until she learns to have fun! |
| #10 – Betsy Bubblegum’s Journey through Yummy Land
Little girls will love Betsy Bubblegum’s Journey through Yummy Land. Drawn in the hip style that is reminiscent of other cool, little girl cartoons (such as the Bratz), Betsy Bubblegum and her friends aren’t bratty. They’re fun and entertaining making this DVD a must have for any little girl between the ages of 3-10. Betsy Bubblegum kind of reminded us of a modern version of Strawberry Shortcake. In Betsy Bubblegum’s Journey through Yummy Land, Betsy goes to Yummy Land because her Uncle is the Mayor. While there, she meets the Ice Cream Pop Girls. Together Betsy and the girls have an amazing adventure. |
