Disney sequels usually tend to come out looking like other sequels. Most of the time, they are unnecessary and meant to make money. However, every now and then there is one worth watching or even buying because it is just that good. In this case, that extra special sequel would be Peter Pan Return to Never Land.
I was surprised to find that this wasn’t another cheesy, useless film, and that instead, I really seemed to like it. A surprise to me was that I liked it as much as I did the original Peter Pan. Of course, the difference between seeing this one now and the original back when I was a child is that I am a much harsher critic than I was as a child. Despite that fact, Peter Pan Return to Never Land won me over and made me a fan. It is one of the best children’s movies to come out in recent years and it is worth the purchase be it as a Christmas present or just to extend your child’s DVD collection.
Release Information:
The original Peter Pan movie debuted in 1953 to critical acclaim like most of the Disney movies of that time. Despite the fact that this was meant to appear as a direct-to-DVD feature, there was a brief theatrical release that came along with this film. Peter Pan Return to Never Land was released by Disney Studios on November 27, 2007.
The Peter Pan Return to Never Land Plot
In Peter Pan Return to Never Land, you are introduced to Wendy’s children Jane and Danny. The time is during WWII and Wendy’s husband is called off to war. The film focuses specifically on Jane. The oldest child of Wendy and her husband, Jane believes that in a time of war there is no room for silly stories and fun.
London is crumbling around the remaining residents of the city and Jane feels as if it’s time to grow up! Jane won’t stand for anymore childish nonsense and that includes listening to stories about Peter Pan and faeries, when they obviously aren’t true. When Captain Hook appears one night to kidnap Jane in a plot to foil Peter, Jane visits that old “second star to the right” that was last visited by her mother, years before.
Naturally, Hook does not manage to foil the great and childish Peter. Jane is taken back to the Lost Boys and Tink respectively. However, not all goes as planned. Jane wants to go home, but before she can she needs to find the beauty in her childhood, in imagination, and most importantly, in faeries.
Jane experiences a great deal of fun and mischief as she attempts to learn to fly so that she can make her way home. She proves to be a solid and important role model for girls under the age of ten. Both headstrong and intelligent, Jane is not one to run from responsibility, but she also knows how to have good, clean fun, as well.
The adventures of Peter Pan Return to Never Land are as timeless and classic as the adventures were the first time around. Kids will love this new classic for the ages and Jane is likely to become one of the standout Disney role models for young girls everywhere.
