As a lover of SpongeBob Squarepants it was a natural choice to have me do this review. There is something incredibly comical about this show. Spongebob is a sponge that isn’t the brightest sponge in Bikini Bottom, but he’s certainly the most entertaining. He’s easily excitable, a hard worker, frightened of his own shadow, and someone who attempts to be a good friend, even when you don’t want one.

Despite being a big fan of SpongeBob Squarepants, I always remain wary of cartoons that release a set number of episodes the way this was done. SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis is a short film with a set of episodes that go along with the movie to lengthen the overall DVD. While I remained skeptical, the DVD isn’t that bad. It’s in true SpongeBob Squarepants form and if you are buying this for kids you can be sure that they will love it!

Release Information:
SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis was released by Paramount Pictures on November 13, 2007. This disc features seven SpongeBob Squarepants episodes, five of which have been on television previously, and a few special features. You can purchase this DVD on Amazon for $11.99. Runtime for this DVD is less than two hours total.

The SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis Plot
The SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis DVD features seven episodes. Five of the episodes have previously aired on television and are available on the season five box set. The two that were not available, will likely be available for season six. What this means is that avid SpongeBob Squarepants lovers who buy the box sets will not need this DVD. However, if you have young kids, it will make a good, inexpensive stocking stuffer that the kids will be sure to love.

Rather than lumping all the episodes together as one, we have summarized all of the episodes down below.

Atlantis Squarepantis - This and, Picture Day (the last episode) are the two episodes that had not been released on DVD prior to this disc. In this episode SpongeBob and friends find an ancient medallion that leads them to the under-sea kingdom of Atlantis. While Atlantis is home to numerous treasures, to SpongeBob and Patrick, none are as famous or important as The Oldest Living Bubble. Seeing the bubble up close can cause these two some trouble, the question is…are they ready for it?

Money Talks – Mr. Krabs loves money. This is no big secret. However, in this episode, Krabs gets to learn how money feels about him. Mr. Krabs makes a wish to hear his cash and when he does, he learns just what his money has on its mind.

Spongebob vs. The Patty Gadget- In this ill-fated episode Spongebob is forced to put his talent on the grill to the test. Unfortunately, SpongeBob is not up against a common man this time. Squidward has a machine that he is certain can out-grill Spongebob if given the chance. Will Spongebob win and remain the grill master or will Krabs higher a more efficient machine and save money paying Spongebob each week?

Slimy Dancing - It’s time for the Bikini Bottom Dance-A-Thon. This isn’t just any dance contest though. Oh No, this is an event that brings together the best and worst of Bikini Bottom. In this shocking contest, one of the pairs, is none other than SpongeBob and Squidward. Squidward has a good reason for not entering on his own – they won’t let him in! When SpongeBob gets in, Squidward agrees to train him to ensure that Spongebob wins the crown!

The Krusty Sponge- The Krusty Krab may be your average land dwelling Burger King, but with Spongebob behind the grill it is as close to low priced Spago as you will get. When a food critic falls in love with Spongebob’s food, Mr. Krabs is there to make sure he makes an extra buck.

Sing a Song of Patrick- Who knew Patrick was set to be the next big musician? Spongebob knew and in this episode he is convinced that everyone needs to hear Patrick’s song. This leads the two into a rigorous PR campaign with the hopes of getting Patrick on the radio.

Picture Day- It’s time for Boat School pictures and Spongebob is focused on taking a wonderful photo. He doesn’t want much. He only wants something that he can look back on years later with fondness. This means that Spongebob has a goal of making it to school freshly ironed and looking absolutely neat. The question is, does he make it to school that way?

Storyline/Plot: ★★★★☆
Replayability: ★★★★★

Directing: ★★★★★

Audio/Visual:
SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis is presented in full frame with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The visual quality came through without a problem. There was no grain and the colors were vibrant. The quality was as good or better in comparison to what you normally see on Nickelodeon. Audio was Dolby Digital and also was quite good. There was no need to adjust the volume and everything came through loud and clear. I don’t have a problem with watching the show on Nickelodeon, but this DVD does look as if there were touchups to make it even sharper for the DVD.

Visual: ★★★★★
Audio: ★★★★★

Bonus Features:
Bonus features for SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis are pretty slim for the most part. The main bonus feature details a tour of the animation studios and offers you a specific look at how the production of SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis occurred.

Bonus Features: ★★½☆☆

Bottom Line:
Due to the fact that many of the episodes on SpongeBob Squarepants: Atlantis SquarePantis have already been released and the rest will be on a new box set shortly, it feels really unnecessary to buy this DVD. However, kids will love it and if you’re a Spongebob fan who cannot afford the box sets then this is a great way to get your SpongeBob fix. All seven episodes offer great entertainment value, so in the end, the cost is worth it for Bikini Bottom fans.

Overall Rating: ★★★★½
