DVD Review: Meet the Robinsons is One Amazing Movie

Meet the Robinsons Box ArtMeet the Robinsons is the 46th Disney animated feature. Done in 3-D animation, Meet the Robinsons was actually crafted after a book, A Day with Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce. The funny thing is that though the book was the basis for the movie, the book and movie are really nothing alike.

While the interesting Robinson family is certainly present in both the book and the movie, in the book Lewis, the main character of Meet the Robinsons the movie, doesn’t even exist. I have never read the book, but I adored this movie. It offers an excellent story and is a lot of fun for both children and their parents to watch together. It has quickly become one of my favorite recent Disney films.

Release Info:
Meet the Robinsons was released by Disney Studios on DVD on October 23, 2007. Perfect for kids of all ages, Meet the Robinsons comes through with amazing video, audio, and a great story the whole family will love. Lasting for 95 minutes, Meet the Robinsons is fast paced without ever feeling rushed and offers loads of special features when the main feature is done.

The Meet the Robinsons Plot:
Meet the Robinsons is perfect for kids because it teaches them that failure is acceptable as long as you learn from your mistakes. As the elder Lewis grows up to say, life is about moving forward. Occasionally it’s good for kids to know that failure isn’t the worst thing that could happen to them.

The plot for Meet the Robinsons revolves around Lewis (Daniel Hansen and Jordan Fry), an orphan who dreams of finding his mother. After going through way more adoption interviews than any child could bare, Lewis, who is an inventor, creates a machine that can scan your brain and show your memories on a television type of screen. Before long, Lewis meets up with a strange kid that claims to be from the future. Wilbur (Wesley Singerman) comes to warn Lewis of the bowler hat guys who is after Lewis. The bowler hat guy (Stephen J Anderson - who also directed this animated film) is here to destroy Lewis’ invention and he does so without Lewis ever knowing that he’s touched it.

Lewis feels like a failure so Wilbur does the only thing he can do. He takes Lewis into the future. Once they get to the future the time machine breaks and trouble ensues! Lewis needs to fix the time machine so that he can get back to the right year. However, while in the future he falls in love with the Robinsons. He loves Wilbur’s entire family as if they were his own. Unfortunately, things aren’t all fun and games because the bowler hat guy is out to change the future and Lewis has to be the one to make things right…or else the future will be destroyed for all mankind.

Audio/Visual:
Meet the Robinsons is available in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, which has been enhanced for 16×9 televisions. The picture quality is bright and clear. Everything comes out sharp, vivid, and absolutely beautiful. Audio is available in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. The sound comes through loud and clear. Everything sounds excellent and comes through without a hitch.

Special Features:
There are quite a few special features that are available on the second disc of Meet the Robinsons. The main features include audio commentary, deleted scenes, music videos, featurettes, and an interactive game.

Meet the Robinsons offers three deleted scenes, two music videos (”Little Wonders” by Rob Thomas and “Kids of the Future” by Jonas Brothers), and Family Function 5000: Family Tree Game. Other features include Backstage Disney where you will find the audio commentary and the featurettes. The featurettes include “Inventing the Robinsons” and “Keep Moving Forward: Inventions that Shaped the World”.

Bottom Line:
Meet the Robinsons is certainly one of the best Disney movies to be put out in recent years. This is one of the funniest, heartwarming family movies that I have seen lately and I absolutely loved it. I have watched it more than once since we received it and it always seems to make me laugh. The kids love it and the jokes and message do not seem to lessen based on your age. This is definitely a good choice for kids. You won’t want to miss making this part of your collection.
