I am forever grateful that I had the chance to grow up in the 80s. The reason I say that is because there were some of the best (and most family friendly) television shows and cartoons of the time in the decade I was raised. There were the Smurfs, Heathcliff, Garfield, and of course, there was The Carebears.
The Carebears was one of the most family friendly cartoons I can remember from those days. The bears were absolutely adorable and they offered morals to boot. Kids not only wanted to play with Carebears, they also wanted them to come down from the sky and solve their problems. In the meantime, they taught that with enough time, love, compassion, and caring we might be able to solve our own problems.
Carebears: Gift of Caring was released by Lionsgate Home Entertainment on August 28, 2007. The DVD comes in a handy little blue DVD carrying case with the Carebears on the cover. Kids will absolutely adore the case and it’s possible that you will think it’s cute, too.
When it comes to content, kids will love the seven heartwarming episodes that make up this disc. Even as an adult, I loved watching these episodes. I remember mentioning how much the disc reminded me of watching the show as a child. Well, upon looking information on this disc up, I learned that these seven episodes are restored from the original show I watched as a seven year old child. This disc was actually released on VHS in 1988 and has been restored for a whole new set of children to enjoy. While the quality is clear the retro feel from the 80s remains in tact. The Carebears look just as good as I remember from when I was a child.
The episodes all offer that warm and fuzzy feel to them. In these seven episodes, you will see plenty of Carebears, including the adorable baby twins, Hugs and Tugs. There are also the villains, the mean and creepy No Heart and his bumbling sidekick, Beastly. They will try to defeat the Carebears, but in this world, goodness always wins!
Episodes include some special themes. You will see the Carebears celebrate some birthday parties, help to get old friends back together again, and they even have a shot to discover a valley filled with gold. The episode listing is available below.
“The Gift of Caring”: While the carebears help a girl make some gifts for her friends, Beastly and Shreeky (No Heart’s niece) set out to stop them!
Birthday Bear’s Blues: The carebears forget Birthday Bear’s birthday and before they know it they are trapped in one of No Heart’s mazes.
“The Long Lost Care Bears”: The carebears discover there are two long lost care bears in the world so they set off to create the reunion of their lifetime.
“The All-Powerful Mr. Beastly”: As Brave Heart and Tender Heart go out on a caring call, Beastly hatches a plan to capture them using No Heart’s broken amulet.
“Desert Gold”: Hugs and Tugs work together as they attempt to help get a map so they can find the valley of gold. They also have to keep the map away from Shreeky.
“Grin & Bear It”: No Heart banishes Beastly, so he tries to become a care bear. Well, that is until he learns how hard being nice can be for him.
“The Turnabout”: No Heart traps the care bears in a dangerous fog, causing them to have to use their hearts to find their way out.
There aren’t any special features with this Care Bear DVD. However, one thing that is offered is the kid-friendly direct play DVD option. This allows children (and adults!) to hit a button and make the DVD go into play mode. This ensures that if a child is using the DVD player they will have a smooth and easy time doing so.
Carebears: Gift of Caring is an amazing DVD all the way around. Kids will love the friendly and adorable Care Bears and adults will have a good time watching a cartoon they used to love as a child. You really cannot go wrong with the Care Bears. This one comes highly recommended.
