In an age when parents are raising kids and worrying about global warming and other things that endanger the planet it becomes a parental responsibility to teach the children to respect the earth. This can be done in a number of ways including recycling and preservation of natural goods. Going Green is also another good way to teach children the importance of respecting the earth. By using materials that can be recycled and reused children pick up habits that will travel into adulthood and to their own children.
Organic Crafts by Kimberly Monaghan is a book filled with earth friendly art ideas that allows you to foster your children’s creativity without harming the earth in any way. There is a good mix of indoor and outdoor activities available in this soft cover book. In going with the green theme, this book was printed on 100% recycled paper.
Organic Crafts offers six chapters filled with great things you can do with your kids. The chapters include:
1. Trees, Leaves, & Twigs
2. Rocks, Pebbles, & Shells
3. Soil, Clay, & Sand
4. Plants, Grasses, & Seeds
5. Animals, Birds, & Insects
6. Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle
Before the chapters begin there are plenty of safety tips, instructions to make earth friendly paint, paste, and glue, and a list for all of the best items for your child’s earth art box. Many of the activities need to be done with adult supervision, though this gives you the perfect opportunity to have fun with your kids while teaching them important lessons.
Monaghan went out of her way to make sure that she thought of everything when working on this book. One of the things that I love about this book is that each activity has a suggested age that corresponds with the activity. This allows parents to find activities that should be on level with their children’s ages without much of a problem.
The other great thing is that almost all of these activities include things you have at home already. You aren’t going to have to buy this book for the ideas and then buy several other items so that you can enjoy those activities with your children. If you need paint, paste, or glue you have the recipes right at hand. Of course, you can purchase the items if you are more comfortable though the instructions that come with the recipes are simple enough for any adult to follow.
Some of my favorite activities include Tree Talker, Nature Journal, Rock Sculptures, Pebble Pendant, Garden Chimes, Hiking Heart, Glittering Sand Castle, Sea Sparkler, Sandman, Potpourri, Earth Dye T-Shirt, and more. The list would truly go on and on. I found all of the ideas to be fun and inventive. Furthermore, of the activities we did as a family, the children loved them all and the adults had a good time, as well.
Organic Crafts has a list price on the back of the book of $14.95. However, you can pick this up at online retailers like Amazon, for just over $10. Either way this book is an excellent addition to any parent’s library. You will definitely get your monies worth when it comes to having family fun and teaching your kids important creative lessons. This comes highly recommended.
