DVD Review: Spongebob Squarepants Season 5 Volume 1

Spongebob Box ArtOne of the best cartoons on television today, short of Avatar: The Last Airbender is Spongebob Squarepants. I have loved this cartoon from the very beginning. As a person who does not see much excitement in today’s cartoons, Spongebob gives me plenty of reasons to reconsider watching some of the newer Nickelodeon shows.

Spongebob is a sponge who lives in Bikini Bottom. His best friend Patrick is perhaps the dumbest sidekick you will ever meet. From there you have Spongebob’s amazingly cheap boss at the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs, and his snooty co-worker and next door neighbor, Squidward. Spongebob lives with his best friend and pet snail, Gary. The show revolves around his zany mis-adventures as a cheerful sponge that lives in a pineapple and works at a fast food restaurant.

Not much changes from episode to episode when it comes to Spongebob. Most episodes he finds himself annoying someone or dragging Patrick into some crazy plan. Occasionally, he will attempt to protect the Krabby Patty recipe from Plankton, the crazed restaurant owner who works across the way from the Krusty Krab and wants to steal success for his restaurant, The Chum Bucket. However, the feeling of Spongebob is generally the same. You tend to know what to expect and in most cases that means a hilarious, light hearted, 30 minutes of family fun.

Spongebob Squarepants is only as good as it is because of the people behind the voices. These men and women pay close attention to every single word that is said. The characters make the smallest things funny. Spongebob is definitely one of the most amusing characters on cartoon television. He is incredibly emotional. The smallest thing makes Spongebob freak out. This is even more amusing when Squidward is around, trying to cause a freak out or looking for a way to get Spongebob out of his pineapple so that Squidward can relax and finally live in peace. Fat chance that will happen, but Squidward always gets excited when there seems to be even the smallest bit of hope.

The Spongebob Squarepants: Season Five Volume 1 box set offers 20 episodes and some special features for your viewing enjoyment. Spongebob’s loud and boisterous attitude is sure to get kids laughing and chances are you will laugh along with them. Some of the best episodes on this two disc set include “The Original Fry Cook”, “New Digs”, “Krabs a la Mode”, “Breath of Fresh Squidward”, “Slimy Dancing”, and “The Krusty Sponge”. That being said I really did not encounter an episode on these discs that I wasn’t fond of watching.

The DVD quality is nearly perfect and the audio comes through wonderfully. The special features include some short clips and a couple of episodes with Bubble Burst Trivia (think Pop Up Video from VH1). This may disappoint some special feature lovers, but the 20 funny episodes should more than make up for a lack of special features.

In the end, if you are looking for a current, entertaining cartoon that both kids and parents can watch and appreciate, then Spongebob Squarepants is just the show for you. It’s lighthearted, non-offensive, and comical for just about all age groups. Children will appreciate Spongebob’s childlike behavior and adults will laugh at his stupidity. We highly recommend this one!
