Warner Bros. released a new Scooby Doo movie on September 4, 2007 called Chill Out, Scooby Doo!. If you or your children like Scooby Doo, then you might just want to add this movie to your Scooby Doo arsenal. However, as far as originality goes, this film only rates as a mediocre Scooby Doo movie.
This film is similar to most of the other Scooby Doo themed movies. There’s a mystery to solve, Scooby and Shaggy uncover the danger, and the crew must work together to figure out the truth. It was relatively predictable and while any Scooby Doo movie has touches of humor to it, this film is your typical Scooby Doo flick, so don’t expect more then what you’re already used to seeing.
In Chill Out, Scooby Doo!, the gang are all vacationing in Paris. Did anyone else notice they brought the mystery van with them?? Anyhow, Velma (Mindy Cohn of Facts of Life Fame), Fred (The Hollywood Voice God, Frank Welker), and Daphne (Grey DeLisle of Avatar: The Last Airbender fame) are enjoying relaxing at a Parisian café, when they realize Shaggy (famed DJ, Casey Kasem) and Scooby (Frank Welker) have yet to make it to Paris. It isn’t long before we find out where the clueless duo is. They’re on a plane to the Himalayas!
The two have been duped into coming along as “bait”, in exchange for food and Scooby snacks, to help a hunter looking to find the Yeti (an Abominable Snow Creature) that is rumored to protect and haunt Mt. Everest. The rest of the gang receives a call from Shaggy, after both he and Scooby escape from the hunter and land in a village halfway up the mountain. The people of the village have all fled, except for the High Lama, a researcher, Professor Jefferies, his native assistant, and the assistant’s sister, Minga (Kim Mai Guest). The only other person on the mountain is the DJ at the weather station, Dell Chillman (Jeff Bennett).
When Velma, Freddie and Daphne realize exactly where Scooby and Shaggy are, they hop in the mystery van, despite Daphne’s protestations that they never get to enjoy their vacations, and they drive to the Himalayas. While some adults may find this a little ridiculous and impossible, kids probably will not even notice this about the movie. Nevertheless, I did and I laughed at the irony. After Velma thinks Freddie has gotten them lost, they arrive at the village and try to find Scooby and Shaggy, before the monster does.
It isn’t long before Scooby and Shaggy encounter the Yeti and the adventure begins as both a romance and a plot based upon greed shape the entire movie. You can expect plenty of running, clue gathering, and Scooby snacks in Chill Out, Scooby Doo! While kids will enjoy this film, especially Scooby Doo fans, you might want to consider renting this one, before purchasing it. It wasn’t the best Scooby Doo and it wasn’t the worst. It was just okay.
This DVD has some special features included as well as the Chill Out, Scooby Doo! original movie. The special features include a “Pirate’s Song” music video and a special Scooby Doo featurette called “Scooby Doo’s Shangri-La Showdown”. This disc is available in three Languages (English, Spanish, and Portuguese) and features subtitles in all three languages for both the main movie and the bonus features.
Information on Chill Out, Scooby Doo! and other Scooby Doo titles can be found on the Warner Bros. Scooby Doo website. You can purchase the movie through Amazon or any of your other local retailers as well as the Warner Bros. website.
