DVD Review: Superman Doomsday is Good for Teens

Superman Doomsday Box ArtAs a parent, I constantly examine the television shows, movies and other forms of media my son could potentially be watching. When I receive an animated movie to review, I know that this does not necessarily mean that my child (who is 12) is going to be able to watch the film. I try to examine these types of films for maturity content, violence, and the potential for adult language. Not all animated films are made for kids nor do they always contain material suitable for children.

When I watched Superman Doomsday, I immediately noticed that this film was darker than the other Superman films out there. While I do not believe my son would be ready to watch this film, I do believe that some teenagers and pre-teens would be able to handle this animated movie. Ultimately, it will depend on your child’s maturity level. The biggest issue that kids will have problems with (besides the increased violence in the film) is the death of Superman. This is done in an emotional way that may be too intense for some kids to be able to handle.

If you’re looking for a great film to watch with another adult or an older child who can handle more mature content and you are interested in animated films featuring Superman, this is an excellent choice. The character-driven story is based on the graphic novel in which Superman dies, as developed by DC Comics. This story was adapted for Warner Bros’ animation studios and released directly to DVD by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Superman Doomsday’s plot follows the death of Superman (Adam Baldwin). In it, the ultimate evil, in the form of a villain called Doomsday, is presented. While Superman, always willing to protect the city of Metropolis, defeats Doomsday, he does so by paying a major price. Superman dies. As the world is reeling from the shock of Superman’s demise, Metropolis and the rest of the world must deal with an increase in crime. The evil of the world can do what they want with no Superman to stop them.

Lois Lane (Anne Heche), who has secretly been dating Superman, was on the brink of getting him to admit he’s Clark Kent. Speaking of Clark, before Superman’s demise, he was off to the trenches of Afghanistan, for some investigative reporting. Perry White and the other workers at the Daily Planet think nothing of his lack of contact with them. He’s probably just lost in the trenches. Lois knows the truth though. Clark isn’t coming back. The only person with whom she can find solace is Clark’s mother, Martha (Swoosie Kurtz).

As villains run rampant, taking over the city, another villain is mourning the loss of Superman in his own demented way. Lex Luthor (James Marsters) is mad because he wanted Superman to die his way. Somehow, he feels cheated by how Superman died. So, he does something about it. He clones Superman and sends his “controlled” Superman out to wipe out crime and convince Metropolis that Superman is back. This, of course, creates waves because he only remembers what Luthor programmed and this does not include any romance with Lois Lane, which was kept under wraps by the real Superman and Lane. It isn’t long before questions begin to crop up about whether Superman is really back…or not.

Superman Doomsday is an enjoyable movie for the right audience. With multiple special features, including the telling of how the story originally came to be in comic form, this DVD is well worth the money you will pay to own a copy. If you plan to buy this one for the kids, it is recommended you rent it before buying it, to make sure this is the type of material your child can handle. Otherwise, you’ll want to own this DVD set and make it a part of your Superman collection.
