By proclamation of King Charles of the Bridge, we hereby challenge artists who study in the third grade through the eighth grade to enter into a contest to create a dragon worthy of the king’s praise. Brave knights and fair ladies, pick your favorite artistic weaponry—from color pencils to paints, and everything in between—to bring the dragon of your imagination to life. Be warned: choose your weapons wisely, as your mythical creature is sure to jump off the page.

Author/illustrator Ralph Masiello will choose the winner and runners-up from all entries received by December 31, 2007. Winners will receive a classroom visit from Ralph Masiello by the end of the 2008 school year (to be arranged by Charlesbridge and the winning school), a $100 gift certificate to their local independent bookstore, a student art kit, and an autographed copy of Ralph Masiello’s Dragon Drawing Book. Second- and third-place winners receive a student art kit and an autographed copy of Ralph Masiello’s Dragon Drawing Book.

The winning artwork will be displayed at Copper Gate Gallery, Ralph Masiello’s children’s book art gallery. Participants must be third- to eighth- grade students. Artwork must be created by the student. Deadline for submission is December 31, 2007. Winners will be notified by January 15, 2008.

Send your original artwork to:

No purchase necessary. Winning art will be chosen by the author/illustrator of Ralph Masiello’s Dragon Drawing Book (Charlesbridge, 2007) based on presentation and artistic interpretation. Contest is open to students in the United States only. Submissions will not be returned. Submission authorizes Charlesbridge to reprint art in part or whole. Charlesbridge employees and their families are not eligible for participation.
