Filed under: — Books, Product Reviews

Meet the Robinsons ColoringIn celebration of one of the newest Disney movies, Meet the Robinsons, Harper Collins Children’s Division and Disney have teamed up to create the Meet the Robinsons Coloring, Activity Book and Crayons. Perfect for children as young as four up to seven or older, this coloring book has a list price of $4.99.

Included with the book are four thick, jumbo crayons in colors of yellow, red, blue, and green. While coloring is listed as one of the primary activities, there are many other things to do in this book. Of course, one of the nicest touches is that even on the activity pages the drawings and pictures are in black and white, just waiting to be colored. In essence every page is a coloring page, some of which contain excellent additional activities.

Some of the other activities include message decoders, connect the dots, and word searches. There are also pages where you need to find hidden objects and where you play the name game. These are just some of the activities though. There are many others in this book. The entire book offers 31 pages of fun activities and an answer key in the back in case you need to look up some answers for your little one.

Activity Book Review: Meet the Robinsons Coloring, Activity Book, and Tattoos

Filed under: — Books, Product Reviews

Meet the Robinsons ColoringIf your young kids are stuck inside on a snowy or rainy day or just need something to entertain them, this might be just what you are looking for. The Meet the Robinsons Coloring and Activity Book might only offer about 31 pages, but there are plenty of activities packed into these pages. At the $4.99 list price on the back of the book you are offered quite a bargain for numerous hours of fun for your children.

Listed for preschool aged children this could easily amuse a child that is in the older to middle elementary school ages. There are two sets of tattoos, in the front and back of the book. These tattoos are your standard wet and apply tattoos that kids love. All the tattoos have something to do with the movie, Meet the Robinsons. Most of them are character tattoos, but there are a few around-the-wrist bands and other tattoos.

Among the activity pages your children will be able to color, solve mazes and unscramble words to decode plans and understand phrases. There are also connect the dot pages and matching activities. Now add in some fill in the blanks and some word finds and your child is bound to have plenty of fun. They might even learn something at the same time!

The last page of the book is an answer key, so if your child is having trouble find the answer you will be able to give them clues. Otherwise you can use it to ensure they chose all the right answers. You could use this for some good, clean fun or you could supplement these activities pages with their school work to provide extra help on spelling and fine motor skills improvement from coloring and the other activities.

Book Review: My Little Pony: A Very Pony Place

My Little PonyMy Little Pony, A Very Pony Place is a soft cover book with two stories that are based on the animated movie. With vivid pictures and stories filled with heart-warming lessons all little girls need to learn, this book makes an excellent addition to every young girl’s library. The stories will be good enough to please on their own, but when you add these pretty little ponies you will be sure to have a hit on your hands.

The first story in this fabulous book is “Come Back Lily Lightly”. It is time for the Rainbow Lights Party and Lily Lightly is going to be the Princess of all that Twinkles and Glows! Lily is so excited and happy about this that her horn begins glowing. Lily becomes terribly embarrassed because she is different than the other ponies and decides to run away.

Lily learns that it is important to be who she is. The other ponies tell her that her glowing horn makes her unique and that is something to be proud of not ashamed. The story has an excellent message for young girls and it ends happily with the special event going on, as planned.

In the second story, “Positively Pink”, Minty looks at the Birthday Book and discovers that it’s Pinkie Pie’s birthday! A huge celebration is planned to surprise Pinkie Pie, but it comes to be that she is not the only person who ends up surprised. The ending is a happy one though and everyone has a smile and laugh before the final line of the book.

Book Review: Snakes Don’t Miss Their Mothers By: M.E. Kerr

Filed under: — Books, Young Adult

Snakes Don't Miss Their MothersSnakes Don’t Miss Their Mothers is a delightful tale centered on the Critters Animal Shelter. Located in the Hamptons and set just before Christmas Eve, Critters Animal Shelter is home to dogs, cats, and even a king snake named Marshall!

The story begins with the adoption of Placido, a one eyed Siamese cat. From the moment Placido is adopted, there are bets on how long it will be before he will return to the shelter. You see, this was not Placido’s first placement. In fact, there were many before this nice new family, according to Irving, a 12-year old German Short-haired Pointer, a lifetime shelter resident who just loves watching the adoption interviews.

Placido moves to live with a child performer and her widowed father on a houseboat. Surprisingly enough, he fits in nicely. However, he leaves behind many friends who we are able to get to know. We meet Goldie (Rex), a yellow Lab who is separated from his family, but eventually finds his way home, Marshall a King Snake who has never had the pleasure of meeting his mother, and Catherine an old, retired Greyhound. Finally, we have Irving the loyal Critters shelter pet.

Book Review: John Audubon, Young Naturalist

John AudubonBorn Jean Jacques Audubon, John Audubon had a true love for birds and nature as a whole. Audubon’s name is one of the first of many things we learn about him as we move through this wonderful book. Like all of the books in the Young Patriots Series, John Audubon, Young Naturalist, is primarily rooted in historical fact. However, at the same time it is entertaining enough to keep your children reading.

Your children will want to learn because the books in the Young Patriots Series make learning fun. Suited for children 8-12 years old this book is a wonderful home school curriculum supplement or a reading project for a young nature lover.

Used as a home school supplement we were able to concentrate both on reading comprehension, with writing prompts, review questions, and discussions after each chapter, and science, where we discussed animals, birds, and nature in various forms. We also did a brief study of bird and animal art by looking at pictures by John Audubon and many other nature lovers.

The entire book was read quickly and was enjoyed thoroughly. Written by Miriam E. Mason, it was obvious to me and most likely other parents that Ms. Mason had extensive experience working with children. The book offered plenty of education with the right blend of unique fun for the entire family or classroom.

Book Review: Whose Chick Are You? By: Nancy Tafuri

Whose Chick are youIt’s a bright and shining morning and an egg is ready to hatch. As the sun shines on the egg it hatches and then we are asked who the chick belongs to through text in the book.

Whose Chick Are You?, is a vivid and easy to read and understand book for small children. Similar to the books that ask about mommies and daddies, this book questions where this chick belongs. The goose, duck, hen, and bird all look to the chick with a questioning nature, but none of them know who truly laid the egg.

It does not take long, just a page or two really, to find out that the new baby belongs with a beautiful swan. The pictures are all very realistic and will be eye catching to a child. The realism will make it easy for children to understand the setting though they shouldn’t have a huge problem with this.

This book will allow them to ask questions about the world, as well. This is particularly true if they are not familiar with a specific type of animal that is listed in the book.

As this is a hardcover book it will hold up well in any child’s library. Suited best for newborn to around five years old this is an excellent book for story time naps or for education.

Product Review: First Puzzles

Filed under: — Product Reviews, Toys

First PuzzlesFirst Puzzles is just what the name implies. It is a set of puzzles listed for children ages 3 and up. The box we were given includes 4 puzzles with 4 pieces each, for a total of 16 pieces for all of the puzzles. With a Mother Goose theme the puzzles include The Little Piggy Went to Market,

Three Little Kittens, Little Bo Peep, and Hey Diddle Diddle. The puzzles are made by MudPuppy and Barefoot Books. I have to admit that I was not familiar with Barefoot by name before we began reviewing children’s materials. However, now they are one of my favorite companies. I love their offerings and often look to see what is new on their shelves when it’s shopping time for my children or nephew.

One of the best things about these puzzles is the construction method. The come in a cardboard box that is decorated with pictures of the puzzles and some flattering pastel colors and designs.

The lid has a set of handles protruding from it so that kids can carry their box of puzzles around with them. The box is sturdy and appears to be able to take at least a small beating, as some kids will give it one. However, as long as the box stays in tact you can remove the puzzle pieces when it’s time to put them together and have the kids put them back in the box when they are done.
